As one of the top universities in the country, UBC is a leader in sustainable
practices in Canada. UBC carries out sustainable practices, conducts sustainability
research, and inspires other universities around the world to do the same.

As a UBC student, it is clear that the university is making sustainable practices
widely available to students. Walking around campus, you can see that all garbage bins
also have labeled recycle and compost bins attached to them. This makes it easy for
students to sort their garbage, and minimize their environmental footprint.

Also, all UBC students have access to a U-Pass. This allows us to use public
transit without any additional costs (the fees are included in our student fees). This
encourages students to take public transit to campus rather than individually driving to
campus every day.

There are also many courses available for UBC students to study sustainability.
Sustainability courses are a common science elective for many UBC students from
many faculties.

After talking with Japanese students, I realized that many of these practices are
similar in Japan. For example, the students said that recycling programs are very
common in their home city. However, I noticed a common difference related to
transportation. Many students mentioned that they ride their bicycles to school every
day. This is a great, sustainable mode of transportation, but is not common for UBC
students.

Some examples of what I do personally to be sustainable is that I always bring
cloth bags to the grocery store instead of buying plastic ones. I also always use a
reusable water bottle, and use public transit instead of driving a car (whenever
possible).

Overall, it is important to maximize sustainable practices to reduce our
contribution to climate change as much as possible. The more sustainable practices
that are being carried out (whether from a large institution like UBC, or from individuals),
the more we can benefit the planet and humanity.
